As we roll into Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area in our trusty Jeep Gladiator, anticipation fills the air. Stepping out of the vehicle, we’re greeted by the serene beauty of a 45-acre lake, once a bustling log pond in the early 20th century. Surrounded by towering pines, the landscape exudes a sense of timeless tranquility that belies its Texas roots. With ample space between neighbors and our own fishing bank, we feel truly immersed in the peaceful serenity of the forest.

With fishing rods in hand, we cast our lines into the merky waters of Ratcliff Lake. The gentle lapping of waves against the shore and the rustling of leaves overhead create a symphony of nature’s melody. It’s not long before my husband reels in a large black bullhead catfish, a testament to the abundant wildlife that calls this forest home.

Taking to the skies with our drone, we gain a higher perspective of the forest below, capturing the sprawling beauty of Davy Crockett National Forest. As the sun sets across the lake, painting the sky with hues of pink and orange, we gather around the campfire to share stories. The warmth of the fire and the glow of string lights inside our tent create a cozy ambiance that harkens back to childhood camping adventures.

As dawn breaks, we brew coffee and sizzle up breakfast on our camp stove, savoring the simple pleasures of outdoor living. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingles with the crisp morning air, invigorating our senses and preparing us for the day ahead. With heavy hearts, we pack up camp and bid farewell to Ratcliff Lake, carrying with us memories that will last a lifetime.
